چکیده

In this paper we present a new logical clock, the barrier-lock clock, whose conception was based on the needs of relaxed consistency DSM systems. Barrier-lock clocks can be used to implement timestamp-based relaxed consistency DSMs since they precisely control the partial order of synchronization operations. The size of barrier-lock clocks does not depend on the number of processors of the system, being proportional to the number of synchronization variables used by the application. Each timestamp gives intrinsic information about the synchronization operation with which it is associated.

LUC Model : A Timestamp Ordering based View Consistency Model for Distributed Shared Memory

Excessive locking and cumulative updates in Distributed Shared Memory (DSM) not only reduces the parallelism for block access but also causes a serious degradation in response time for a dense network. This paper proposes a new consistency model in DSM named Last Update Consistency (LUC) model, where the model uses logical clock counter to keep the DSM consistent. The logical clock always incre...

A Node Count-Independent Logical Clock for Scaling Lazy Release Consistency Protocol

The use of per processor vector logical clocks in lazy release consistency (LRC) protocol implementation may restrict its scalability since the size of these clocks depends on the number of nodes of the system. We propose a new logical clock, the barrier-lock, whose concept is based on the causality of synchronization operations. Its size is proportional to the number of synchronization variabl...

On the use of Clocks to Enforce Consistency in the Cloud

It is well known that the ability to timestamp events, to keep track of the order in which they occur, or to make sure they are processed in a way that is meaningful to the application, is of paramount importance in a distributed system. The seminal work by Leslie Lamport[30] has laid the foundations to understand the trade-offs associated with the use of physically and logically synchronized c...

Methods for Enhancement of Timestamp Evidence in Digital Investigations

This work explores how the evidential value of digital timestamps can be enhanced by taking a hypothesis based approach to the investigation of digital timestamps. It defines the concepts of clock hypotheses, timestamps and causality in digital systems. These concepts are utilized to develop methods that can be used in an investigation to test a clock hypothesis for consistency with timestamps ...

Low Cost Coherence Protocol for DSM Systems with Processor Consistency

Modern Distributed Shared Memory (DSM) systems offer high speed application processing by allowing to use relaxed consistency models, such as processor consistency. Unfortunately, most of the existing coherence protocols implementing relaxed consistency in multiprocessors or loosely couples clusters use write-update strategy which incurs large communication overhead, and therefore is impractica...
